Established: 1941
Location: Central Kentucky
Acres: 52,708

photo courtesy NPS The longest cave in the world. Its passages extend 340 miles in all directions below the earth's surface. With many more miles unexplored! The deepest explored level is at 350 feet. The tallest chamber is Mammoth Dome with a 190 foot high ceiling (taller than the Statue of Liberty).

Explored by ancient man 4,000 years ago this cave continues to surprise spelunkers with its intricate gypsum (calcium carbonate) rock formations and mysterious life forms. The fish, shrimp, crayfish and spiders found within Mammoth have adapted to life in total darkness by evolving without eyes and contain an unpigmented, clear, colorless exoskeleton.

There are three campgrounds at Mammoth with 220 campsites that are open year-round. The Dennison Ferry and Houchins Ferry Campgrounds are small and secluded campgrounds located on the south bank of the Green River. The Green and Nolin Rivers are favorite destinations among fisherman who regularly catch largemouth bass, muskie, and catfish.

The only access to these campgrounds is a gravel road that is not suitable for large RVs or trailers. The Headquarters Campground near the main visitor center is less scenic but more modern than Dennison Ferry or Houchins. Headquarters Campground contains 110 campsites. Tickets for cave tours can be obtained in advance by calling (502) 758-2328. Campgrounds are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
