If misty moss laden bayous and cypress stands filled with slithering snakes and alligators fascinate you, then the Atchafalaya Basin is your next stop. Comprised of a network of rivers and bayous that total 750,000 acres. Over 100 miles of remote backcountry waterways for canoe or small boat travel. Together with the Everglades in Florida, and the Okefenokee Swamp of Georgia, Atchafalaya is one of the three great subtropical wetland areas in America. It symbolizes the essence Louisiana's mystic natural beauty.

The Lake Fausse Pointe State Park (which borders the western portion of the Atchafalaya Basin) has the area's best campground. It is an excellent place to center your activities while exploring this region. The park is a watery wilderness of bayous where you can indulge in some of the nation's finest bass fishing. Lake Fausse Pointe is located 18 miles east of St. Martinville on Hwys 96, 679, and 3083. It contains 50 campsites with electrical hookups, showers, a boat ramp, and hiking trails. There are also 18 lakeside cajun styled cabins. Open year-round. Lake Fausse Pointe State Park, (888) 677-1400 or (225) 342-8111, or write to P.O.
