NC, Pisgah National Forest, its mountainous terrain coming alive with the colors of fall
Pisgah is North Carolina's oldest and largest National
Forest. Named after the mountain from which Moses viewed the
promised land. Pisgah is centered in the middle of the expansive
Great Smoky Mountains. A land filled with dense hardwoods, trout
streams, and waterfalls. Looking Glass Falls (off Rt 276, #36 below) is one
of the most scenic in the eastern U.S. A diverse terrain which
comes alive with white dogwood blossoms and brilliant azaleas and
rhododendrons blooming in April and a myriad of colors in the fall.
Most of Pisgah's terrain is mountainous with 12 peaks over
6,000 feet. Contributing to pleasant daily summertime
temperatures in the 70s. Pisgah contains the highest mountain
east of the Mississippi River (Mt Mitchell at 6,684 feet). Area
wildlife includes black bears and white-tailed deer. The Pisgah
National Fish Hatchery keeps nearby streams well stocked
throughout the year (the largest in the East). There are 8
campgrounds with over 500 campsites in the forest. Open
year-round. Pisgah National Forest, PO Box 8, Pisgah National
