NC, Wright Brothers
National Memorial, World's
first successful
airplane. Developed and flown by the Wright Brothers at Kill
Devil Hills
Frank and Orville Wright began their careers in a small
bicycle shop they opened in Dayton, Ohio. It was here they became
interested in air travel and began building kites and gliders. By
1903 they constructed the first airplane. It had a 40 foot
wingspan and was powered by a 12 HP engine. The first flight
lasted 12 seconds and traveled 120 feet on the sands of Kill
Devil Hills, North Carolina. The Wright Brothers like Henry Ford,
Thomas Edison, Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and many of the nation's
greatest entrepreneurs who began with practically nothing and
worked out of their garages, continue to inspire those in search
of the impossible dream. Wright Brothers National Memorial, P.O. Box 2539, Kill Devil Hills, NC 27948 (252) 441-7430, www.nps.gov/wrbr.
