
One of three great coastal dune
systems in America (the others include North
Carolina's Outer Banks and Texas' Padre Island). The
Oregon Dunes stretch for 40 miles from Florence south to
Coos Bay and reach heights of 500 feet. They are among
the tallest in the U.S. Their shapes shifting with every
storm. Rising in one area, falling in another. Providing
spectacular vistas of the sea and adjacent evergreen
forests. It is not uncommon to spot deer and an
occasional black bear roaming these sand swept dunes.
The
Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area has 14 campgrounds
adjacent the dunes that are open year-round. The largest campgrounds being Driftwood and Horsfall
with 70 sites (the only campgrounds that accept reservations). Some of the more rustic and scenic campgrounds include
the lakefront Tahkenitch Landing campground (27 sites seen to the left) and Lagoon (39 sites seen below). Oregon Dunes National
