OR, Fort Stevens State Park, WW II gun batteries
Fort Stevens is the northernmost of the
scenic State Parks in Oregon. A favorite among
locals and tourists alike. Combining an interesting blend
of history and nature. The park is strategically located
at the mouth of the Columbia River and was an active
military base for nearly 100 years. Its
visitor center and military museum guides visitors
from the Civil War to WW II. Highlighting such events as the fort's
bombardment by a Japanese submarine during WW II. One of
only a few such attacks on the continental U.S. during
the war.
Hikers enjoy the park's 3,700 acres and
nine miles of trails that meander from the Pacific Coast
to the park's four inland lakes. While fishermen can test their luck and skill
with some of the finest fishing in the state at the mouth of
the Columbia River. The Fort
Stevens Campground is Oregon's largest with 518
campsites (171 full hookups, 304 electrical, and 43 tent sites). Prices per night are seasonally rated at $13-$16 (Oct 1-Apr30) and $17-$20 (May 1-Sep 30). Fort Stevens State Park, US 101, Hammond. OR 97121 (503) 861-1671 or (800) 551-6949. For camping reservations (800) 452-5687.

aground here in 1906 remain visible on
the beach.
