Isolated by its distance from any large
city (Phoenix and Las Vegas the nearest which are over
250 miles away) and lack of roads, Glen Canyon remains
one of America's most remote hideaways. A maze of blazing
red-rock cliffs and canyons that stretches for 186 miles
across Utah, Arizona, and Colorado. The world's largest natural bridge (Rainbow Bridge) spanning 275 feet is located in this recreation area. While at the center is Lake
Powell, the second largest man-made lake in the
United States (only Lake Mead is larger).
UT, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Glen Canyon Dam
Lake Powell was created by the 710 foot
Glen Canyon Dam. Built after conservationists were unable
to stop its development. The scenic treasures of the
canyon balanced against the electricity and water the dam
would provide. Nature at odds with the forces of growth
and development. A struggle which Yosemite's Hetch Hetchy
Valley also lost. Glen Canyon and Hetch Hetchy are two of
the most scenic River Valleys ever flooded in the United
States. Defeats which have helped to save other
breathtaking areas like the Yampa River Valley in the
Dinosaur National Monument.

As some of nature's majesty was covered
forever by this flooding, other recreational avenues were
opened. Lake Powell provides boaters with access to 186
miles of turquoise blue waterways. Without the usual
effects of erosion, the shoreline is unusually rugged and
steep. A characteristic of all man-made lakes. Glen
Canyon has four campgrounds located at Lees Ferry,
Wahweep, Bullfrog, and Halls Crossing. There are several
marinas and houseboat rentals are available. Glen Canyon is the most visited attraction
in Utah with 2.3 million visitors enjoying its waterways each year. Glen Canyon
