Established: 1988
Location: Central Minnesota
Acres: 635

The largest open pit iron ore mine in the world. The Hill Annex Mine has produced over 63 million tons of ore from 1913 until the high grade ore was depleted and it closed operations in 1978. The hole these mining operations created is over 300 feet deep and uncovers ore that is 2 billion years old. Today the basin is largely flooded with water since the pumps that kept the area dry were stopped.

Visitors are taken on a 2 hour guided tour which circumvents the open pit. Reaching the base hundreds of feet below the surface. The walls are the reddish color of the ore. An impressive excavation taking 65 years to complete. Hill Annex Mine State Park, P.O. Box 376, Camulet, MN 55716 (218) 247-7215. www.dnr.state.mn.us/parks_and_recreation/state_parks/hill_annex_mine/index.html
